How will we accomplish this?

03.

How often?

Richards Rubbish Roundup's main mission will be to solicit and organize volunteers to regularly pick up litter all around the Pikes Peak Region. Our goal is to make our Metropolitan area the cleanest, most litter-free and safest in Colorado. We will also advocate to local governments, residential and private property owners, on how to better control our litter, particularly in areas that have repeated problems.

We will reach out to local service clubs, social organizations, schools, neighborhood groups, homeowner and apartment associations, metro districts, social groups and businesses to solicit volunteers to regularly pick up litter throughout the Pikes Peak Region.  Our goal is to have 100's of volunteers throughout the Region who are willing to regularly pick up litter.

Unlike laudable local volunteer efforts like Creek Week and the Great American Cleanup that occur once a year, our purpose will be to regularly enlist volunteers to keep our Region litter free as needed. We anticipate that many areas will need to be cleaned on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis.  We hope to have a "Corp" of local volunteers to call upon on every day of the week as well as organize larger groups for "Rubbish Roundup" pick ups when appropriate.  We will also help organize pizza parties for our larger groups as well as discounts at local restaurants and bars and other ways to help our volunteers celebrate their accomplishments.

We will have a hotline and a website available at all times that can be accessed by anyone in our Region who identifies places that need to be cleaned, on public or private property.  We will be in touch for City and County officials for their suggestions. Our roundups will focus on highly visible public spaces, major roadways, highway exits, medians, parks (including dog parks), trails and open spaces with a special emphasis on Fountain Creek and its tributaries.

We specialize in providing to all volunteers (for free), all that they need to pick-up and dispose of litter safely.  We will outfit them with long-armed pickers, rubber gloves (washed after every use), yellow vests, whistles (to call others  in case of an emergency) and strong garbage bags with rings attached to them for easy handling). We will have locked dumpsters available near where the roundups are occurring and the location for disposing of any sharps or needles near by.

We insist that no one pick up liter alone (always in pairs). We will provide "over shoe" cleats to volunteers for steep or slippery areas, special receptacles for animal waste and sharps (needles), as well as detailed instructions for safe parking, entering liter areas, and collecting by and in streams (we will provide waders). We have strict protocols for avoiding human waste and encounters with the homeless or homeless camps. We will also leave a first aid kit with the leader of each group.

Coordination & notification

Richards Rubbish Roundup will communicate well with all the pertinent Local Governments and non-profits to make sure that our litter pick ups are coordinated with them and do not duplicate their efforts. In addition, we will let the appropriate public agencies or private property owners when and where we work and notify the proper authorities about homeless encampments or other concerns like potentially dangerous waste we discover. In addition, we will work closely with Regional Law Enforcement and Social Service agencies when needed to make them aware of concerns we have about people we encounter.

Non-profit status

We are a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We will also apply for a C4 status for the small amount of lobbying we may do with local and state governments.
